China-African trade and investment have captured major academic and public interest as China, through its heterogeneous private and public actors has become the leading exporter of and investor in manufacturing and infrastructure on the African continent. China has become a household name and no longer means just a country, it connotes Chinese goods, Chinese firms, Chinese citizens, Chinese projects, and Chinese languages. To some, Africa is ‘gaining’ in its relations with China, especially in the area of investment; but, to others, beneath China’s overtures of friendship and win-win cooperation/Third World partnership, there are challenges associated with the ‘China factor’. What do individual countries like Angola tell us about the role of China in Africa?
