Edmilson Angelo: Friend or Enemy? An examination of public and elite views of China’s engagement wit

Edmilson's doctoral research compares how African publics and elites understand China’s engagement with Africa. He uses Angola as a case study.

China’s increasing involvement in Africa during the past decade is one of the most controversial and hotly debated issues in the region. Some argue that China has brought significant economic and political opportunities to the continent with large investment and infrastructure, while others see in China’s interests in Africa a form of neo-colonialism and support for authoritarian governments at the cost of human rights, the environment and good governance. This work sets out to analyse where the Angolan general public and its elite position themselves on this argument.

Edmilson holds a MSc in African Studies from the University of Oxford, and a Bachelors degree from the University of Westminster. Prior to his current research on China’s engagement in Africa, his work focused mainly on youth and politics in Africa.
